“The term Canadian author popularized “Gen X” Douglas Coupland’s 1991 novel, “Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture,” concerning young adults during the late 1980s and their lifestyles. Gen Xers were born shortly before introducing digital technologies like Apple’s or Microsoft’s operating systems. They interacted with computers early on, which helped them better understand their concepts.
Gen Xers have been shaped by experiences such as the emergence of music videos, open classrooms, inflation, single-parent and/or blended families, latchkey lifestyle, space shuttle explosion, widespread political corruption, inflation, recession, and post-Vietnam national malaise. They were at the start of the video game era, cable TV, Walkman, and the Internet.
As a culture, they were far more open to diversity in race, religion, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation.”
