How Technology Has Changed Workplace Communication

In a Forbes article published on December 10, 2013, Natalie Burg states “Business doesn’t happen face to face as often as some would like. “Collaboration technology sprang up 20 years ago, but we kept acting, behaviorally, like we did when we were meeting face to face,” said Keith Ferrazzi, best-selling author of the books “Never Eat Alone” and “Who’s Got Your Back.” As it turns out, the answer to all of the complaints about the evolving workplace wasn’t to abandon technology for a more human way of working, but to evolve technology to make the new way of working more human

”In the book ”10 Answer Keys Communicating with the 5 Generations in the Workplace” page 183, authors Meredith “Kit” Bromfield and Mary L. Erlain write, “We can look at the changing face of the workplace as a land of opportunity, as opposed to a problem. The ability to deploy new technology systems and resources needs to be a thoughtful process. It will have a significant impact on business performance. With planning wrapped around the deployment, you can increase the chances to improve productivity, increase levels of quality, shorten sales and delivery processes, improve customer service, and ultimately drive revenue and profitability.·

  • Make a list of the technologies you currently use in your workplace
  • What technologies is your competition using to gain an edge in their business?·
  • Create a survey for your employees to learn what technologies they use both professionally and personally·
  • Where’s the gap?

Meredith “Kit” Bromfield, www.meredithbromfield.com, Crossing Your Bridge© believes, “Technology is here to stay so what can you do to make it work for everyone in your workplace is the question of the century. Finding the right fit is the goal of every leader/manager to ensure maximum productivity. So how do you do that, well in our book we list a few ideas as to how to get started? Technology is an asset that when used properly can help you reach all your goals.”

Mary L. Erlain, www.peak-ds.com and www.maryerlain.com, Peak Development Strategies believes, “The good news is that technologies are becoming increasingly user friendly which can allow those less familiar with technology to be on board themselves more easily. Regardless of age, it is always important to understand how employees are wired. There are those early and late adopters in all generations. It is mission- critical to understand how they learn, what their preferences are, and how quickly they move along the learning curve.”
