- Generation Z’s (born after 1990)
- Also known as iGeneration or Nextars
Our Gen Z’s have been raised in the internet and digital age. Information has been a click away for this generation. As a result, the Gen Z’s can naturally process information (and perhaps expect others) at a faster rate. Like their predecessors, they are tech dependent. They have been exposed to mobile technology at an earlier age as the ability to own a phone has become more economical and common with the Gen Z’s.
They are a generation of early adopters because of their ease in working with gadgets as well as the frequency of new gadgets, apps, etc. hitting the market.
Our Gen Z’s have a constant need for connectivity with their peers. They do this with ease through the internet. Smart Phones have made this possible. Social media and instant messaging are their communication channels of choice.
This generation is very entrepreneurial in nature. The opportunities to open their own business have increased. It is not uncommon for this generation to run businesses that have employees. With the market challenges, lack of job opportunities, as well as knowledge base being a click or swipe away, they in some cases have had no other choice but to start a business in order to earn a living.
Employers need to understand what they will be facing with Generation Z so managers can tap their intelligence and provide the support these young workers going to need as an entire generation.
“It’s a mistake for employers to say they’ll just find one of the good ones,” he says. “You can’t hire your way out of the issues you’ll be facing. They’re good workers but high maintenance.”
